Medicare rebates can apply if a GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician has referred you and completed a Mental Health Treatment Plan. As rebates are not intended to cover the entire cost of your treatment, a gap fee will usually apply.

Arranging an Appointment
We can provide a brief phone consultation at no charge to help determine if we are the appropriate provider for you. Both self-referrals and referrals from medical and allied health practitioners are welcome.
Under the Allied Health Initiative for Better Mental Health Outcomes, individuals can access specific psychological services and receive a Medicare rebate. If you are experiencing any mental health concerns, such as feeling depressed, stressed or are experiencing personal difficulties, you may be eligible for a Mental Health Treatment Plan completed by your GP or psychiatrist.
Medicare rebates are possible if referred by a GP. The amount you receive from your Medicare rebate:
- clinical psychologist Medicare rebate is $126.50 (out-of-pocket expense $83.50)
- mental health accredited social worker Medicare rebate is $75.95 (out-of-pocket expense $75.95)
A maximum of 10 sessions can be claimed through Medicare in a calendar year.
Organising a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan
Phone your local medical practice and ask the receptionist to book an extended appointment for you with your GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan assessment (please note that a Mental Health Treatment Plan takes additional time for your GP to complete).
Discuss your concerns with your GP and ask him or her if you are eligible for a MHTP so you can access psychological services and receive a Medicare rebate.
If you are eligible, you should leave the appointment with your GP MHTP, and you can call your treatment provider and make an appointment.
Please make sure you bring your MHTP to your first appointment.
The initial session can take 60-75 minutes. Therapy sessions are usually 50 minutes, and EMDR sessions can take up to 90 minutes.
Longer sessions are available on request.
